Cosmo the Hungry Rabbit

This spring a little rabbit moved in under our back deck.

I named him Cosmo.

I saw him almost every morning, hoping around the yard and munching on all the clover in our grass.

But it wasn’t long before he discovered the yummy new veggies I had planted in my vegetable garden!

The fence was no match for this tiny guy! And he had quite the appetitie. He ended up eating three bell pepper plants, two hot pepper plants, three eggplant plants and an entire broccoli stalk all within a matter of days! I knew it was time to rabbit proof my fence if I wanted any hope of getting fresh vegetables.

And it worked great! You can check out my post about building it here.

I fed him fresh fruit, oats and water in hopes of being able to pet him, but I could never get close enough.

As he got bigger I saw him less, but he still came back to visit every now and then.

Then the best thing ever happened….
Cosmo had a baby!!!!!!!!

Now they both come visit my yard 🙂

  1. Oh my gosh this is the cutest thing ever. I just love rabbits, but they can be so destructive! There were a certain few that would chase each other around the neighborhood here.
What an adorable little story this is, and how perfect that you've been able to get the coolest pictures, too.

  3. Aww that's so cute! She obviously felt very safe in your yard to have a baby there, that's so awesome!
I totally feel you on the whole plant thing though. I remember when I grew some seedlings and once they grew big enough put them in pots outside. The local rabbit obviously thought I'd served it a salad as they were all gone the next day. I was so mad! They're so cute though it's hard to stay mad at them!

  4. Oh so cute! I would do the exact same, feed him to hope to pet him. Even though he naughtily ate all those vegies and the fence is still rabbit proofed, it's nice to see he still visits, and that he has a little one now too!

  6. Aw my word – how cute (I say that as someone with a garden who use to think squirrels were super cute until they started tearing up everything). but still super cute. I would what he thought of the hot peppers, I can't imagine that would be high on the menu for a rabbit haha. I hope he sticks around over the chillier months!
