Autumn Cemetery

I’ve always thought cemeteries were a peaceful place.

Especially on a quiet autumn evening.
The rolling hills in the Old Salem cemetery are laden with intricate grave stones, and lavish crypts.

No one else was around, making for the perfect walk, as the setting sun cast a warm glow over all the graves and the crisp cool air began to settle in.

My favorite grave stone is one that takes the shape of two trees, belonging to a husband and wife who are buried together. I like it because it seems like something I would have chosen.

Spending time in cemeteries is good for the mind. A favorite quote of mine suggests visiting cemeteries often, because “To get in touch with life, we must first, get in touch with death.”

A Day at the Fair

The fair is what first got me interested in photography, so many years ago.

All the magical bright colors, the flashing lights, the exciting atmosphere.. I just wanted to capture it all.

It’s still my favorite place to take photos of.
Even though they have the same rides every year, and I probably end up taking the same photos over and over again, it still never feels old when I look through them afterward.

This year was extra fun because we bought ride passes, which is something we hadn’t done in many years. My sister and my husband aren’t fazed by rides and rode all the scary ones, meanwhile my best friend and I freak out and scream our heads off on even the gentlest rides. But it was all fun!

The Zipper is the scariest ride in the park, and my husband and sister rode it! I couldn’t believe it. But it is one of my favorite ones to photograph.

I love it when the fair comes to town!

Cat Photos Friday #122 Spooky House

Every year for Christmas the cats get a cardboard gingerbread house from Target. But this year, they I saw they were selling a Halloween haunted house! Since we got all three cats in October they’ve always seemed like Halloween cats to me, so I couldn’t pass this spooky house up!

They all took turns sitting in it, and sitting near it. They love getting new toys!

Everyone is feeling spooky around here!

Clouds Above Craggy Gardens

Last October we took a trip to the Blue Ridge mountains and I never posted the last of the photos.

Way way up, along the Blue Ridge Parkway‘s winding roads, tucked away between the tall mountain peaks, is a place called Craggy Gardens.

On the crest that connects the craggy domes, Clouds fly swiftly across, often obscuring the road.

A quiet little visitors center sits on the ledge, overlooking the valley. The perfect spot to watch the storms pass by.

As the storm moves on, little cloud tufts rise up from the trees to join the large formations up above and then drift away. Leaving the blue sky to return.

The best time to visit Craggy Gardens is after a storm.

This October

I went to the fair and had a blast taking colorful photos and eating crazy food.

We went to the mountains and I found a cool little friend.

I got a new job! I like it a lot and I am relieved to finally be rid of the insanity that was my old job.
(Although I feel like I’ll always, somehow, be connected to that place forever. We were one strange dysfunctional family)

We tore up the ugly concrete path in the backyard and put in this cute new paver path. I can’t wait to see how it looks in the spring with all the flowers around it.

I baked so many pumpkin flavored treats! These ones were the favorite.

We carved pumpkins and had a fun and spooky Halloween.
And we finally got a washer and dryer after three years!! I have done one load so far, and I look forward to washing more things in the future.

October was a pretty dang good month. Steven and I both got new jobs. He started working for the company he has been hoping to work for ever since he graduated, and I finally got a job that is not a stressful, confusing roller coaster of insanity and confusion. Plus, we are both working close to home and our buildings are across the street from each other. It’s a dream come true!  It really makes a difference when you’re happy with your job.

There were so many fun things we did in October that I haven’t gotten around to blogging about, so hopefully I will get those posted in the next few weeks.

I  hope everyone had a great October as well!

I am looking forward to November and breaking out all the CHRISTMAS stuff!

October Recap

October is over already!  It didn’t seem to fly by as fast as September did, but it still went by pretty quick. Here are some highlights of the past month.

We took a few trips through the mountains to see the turning colors. Something I’ve wanted to do for the last couple of years but we could never find the time.

The local fair happens at the beginning of October and I took a ridiculous amount of photos there.
I ate plenty of autumn treats, including these homemade caramel apples, apples martinis and of course, plenty of pumpkin spice coffees!

I watched the trees change colors.

My mom found the cutest lost cat! We made posters, put them around the neighborhood and he was back at his home by the end of the day.

We decided to check out a little restaurant a few blocks from our house and were not disappointed by their breakfast! I had an egg and cheese on a croissant and it was sooo good!

The month ended with a pumpkin carving party and a fun Halloween!

I finally found a new job!  It’s weird going from being free all day every day, to being very busy all day at work. I’m usually exhausted by the end of the day. But hopefully I’ll get used to it soon!

I kinda went a little blogging crazy in October, with a post nearly every day! I usually try not to have one more than every other day, but I just had too many ideas. Since I am working again I’ll probably go back to less posts, hopefully I won’t run out of ides or be too tired to write anything.

I bought an older version of photoshop elements at a good price and I am pretty excited about it. I used an online photo editor before and I just wasn’t happy with the way it compressed all my photos.

I am VERY excited for November because in my opinion, Christmastime starts the day after Halloween! (Yeah, I’m one of those people)  But Christmas is my favorite time of the year, why wait to start celebrating if it make me so happy? I had the biggest smile on my face on the drive home from handing out Halloween candy at my moms because I was so darn excited that it was time for Christmas! And no I didn’t forget about Thanksgiving, I just see it as part of the holiday celebration!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a happy October!
